Rules of storage and features of bitumen transportation
Proper storage and correct transportation of petroleum bitumen are the fundamental facts of the preservation of its operational and physico-mechanical properties.
Petroleum bitumen is the most demanded and widely used petroleum products in the construction industry. This popularity is due to the fact that bitumen has excellent performance properties and wide functionality. However, most often, bitumen production is carried out far from the places of their direct use, which leads to the need to transport the material over various distances. In order to supply bitumen, which is of high quality and retains its basic working properties and technical characteristics throughout the entire time of transportation, it is necessary to ensure proper storage and transportation conditions for the train.
How does proper storage technology affect the properties of bitumen?
To preserve the quality of petroleum bitumen, it should be stored in special containers positioned vertically or horizontally. Vertical storage is a preferable option, since this method allows excess moisture to evaporate, which entails the formation of a special "protective crust" that prevents bitumen from contacting the air. It is worth noting that the inner surface of the bitumen storage tank is additionally treated with an anti-corrosion compound, since bitumen has a mildly aggressive reaction to the environment during storage.
However, in order to maintain the optimum bitumen temperature and its operational properties, one tank is not enough. To preserve all the working qualities of bitumen and prevent its premature aging, long-term storage of the composition at high temperatures should be avoided or it should be possible to reduce the temperature in the storage tank to a minimum, which will then allow subsequent heating of the composition. Note that during stationary storage of bitumen at high temperatures, its properties are lost, but not significantly, since contact with oxygen in this case is minimal.
The main risk of loss of the working properties of petroleum bitumen may arise at the stage of storage on construction sites at the consumer, when improper bitumen heating systems are used, for example, fire pipes or electric heating elements. In order to eliminate excessive aging of bitumen, it is necessary to ensure a smooth heating mode of the bitumen composition, minimize contact with air and, if possible, reduce the storage time of bitumen before use.
Features of bitumen transportation
For the transportation of bitumen, specialized vehicles are used, which are equipped with special thermal insulation walls and heating elements, which are necessary for the transportation of bitumen in the cold season in order to ensure the optimal temperature of the composition. Transportation by bitumen trucks is acceptable for short distances, since during the movement of the train, its temperature should not be lower than +130 °C.
Meanwhile, there is another type of transportation that is used exclusively for hard (cold) bitumen. In this case, transportation is carried out in sealed barrels or wound drums, which minimize the contact of bitumen with oxygen, thereby ensuring the safety of its physical and mechanical parameters and operational properties.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that regardless of what type of petroleum bitumen is stored or transported, compliance with the established requirements allows us to guarantee the quality of the oil product and the cost-effectiveness of its functional characteristics.
